Size Matters!
Ultrasounds and Umbilical Cords
Over the years I have had numerous people come to me either in a panic or in elation convinced that they were having a boy based on seeing a ginormous "thing" on their baby’s ultrasound.
Sometimes, these “ghost dongs” take the form of a huge rope sticking out from their baby's belly on an ultrasound. Take a moment and picture the human body. Genitals DO NOT stick out from the center of the human stomach. There is a reason why we say "between the legs" - it is because that is where genitals are located. If you look down you'll see the middle of the stomach is where your belly button is!
Try to imagine a baby laying flat and you will soon realize that prominent thing you're looking at simply cannot be a penis! If you’re looking for genitals, think crotch, not belly button. The nub as it appears on ultrasound, will be basically coming from the top of the baby’s butt, or slightly above that. Penises do not emerge from the center of a baby’s chest like the monster from the Alien movies.
Additionally, size matters. While a baby’s genitals are a little bigger than you might expect in proportion to their bodies, if you’re looking at a baby hung like a Greek god on steroids who is really happy to see you, the odds are that you are not looking at the goods but at some other body part altogether. People regularly message me with ultrasound pictures where the supposed penis is as long as the baby’s entire thigh!
The angle of the dangle also matters. In most cases, the nub does not stick up straight but is laying flat or even pointing a little downwards. It is mostly or entirely hidden by the baby's curled up legs. In order to get a good nub shot, the tech needs to focus the ultrasound so the outer leg is rendered invisible and the focus of the wand is capturing only the genitals. Ultrasounds do have the ability to do cutaway shots; this is why you can see pictures of your baby’s teeth and eye sockets in an ultrasound.
At times, this focusing of the ultrasound is not done completely, and you will see an image of the baby's leg bone instead of, or superimposed over, the actual nub. Try to keep in mind you are looking at a very small little being, and so if you see a vast protuberance sticking up and waving hello, that is not in any way proportional to the rest of the body, that is either leg bone or cord. The cord is long and can go all over and so it is entirely possible for the cord to be between the legs. Less often, a baby’s outstretched arm can be mistaken for a nub.
Mistaken gender identities are very likely when you are given a potty shot before 15 weeks. Potty shots taken too early are not reliable because boys and girls still look the same from below. Contrary to popular belief, human female babies are NOT Barbie Dolls! Many people expect that girl babies are going to be totally smooth with nothing there, so if they see anything in this zone, they assume baby is a boy. But as we all know there is "stuff" on girls too and early on in gestation, this stuff looks a lot like what boys have. Boys and girls look identical till the 12th week at the very earliest even using the nub method, and potty shots are hard to differentiate for several weeks after. More like 18 weeks plus for potty shots is best. So if you see something sticking out on an early potty shot (even if it IS in proportion, and even if it is genitals) that does not mean you're having a boy. Girls have that too!
The ultrasound can very easily capture the cord between the legs from the potty shot angle. From below, the cord looks like boy bits even when it isn't. I have even seen a baby whose hand was mistaken for genitals by a trained ultrasound technician, even though it was several millimeters away from the body, was far too big to be the goods, and did not resemble a penis at all. Even the techs can get this wrong.
Please don’t panic or jump for joy until it’s time. Wait till the appropriate age of gestation to find out gender and try not to pore over your ultrasound pictures looking for hints. If your baby appears to have a "penis" that is out of all proportion to the body it is attached to, the odds are good that is NOT GENITALS but some other thing. If the "thing" you think you see is in the wrong place entirely, or else it is so long as to be unbelievable, that is NOT the "thing" you think it is!
